Čoška and Maroška - daughters of a Fairy

"The old men tell that in  Marišćina were living two good sisters named Čoška  and Maroška. Over their house were bent bitter oaks and oaks. By day blackbirds were singing on them, and by night doormouses (eatible animals) were sneezing and throwing down acorns. Squirrels are happily jumping from the bitter oak to oak. If these old oaks, could speak, they would better tell us many things , which  we  do not know about those beautiful old times.˝

Ivo Jardas

The legend says that in the beautiful Marišćina long ago lived daughters of a fairy, Čoška and Maroška. They were gladly swimming in pools of water. At that time there lived a rich nobleman who had stolen to one of the fairy scarf with special powers, without which she could not fly. He promised to return her scarf if she marries him. As she had no choice, she agreed. They had two daughters. The fairy loved children, but always longed for her fairy life, but failed to find the hidden scarf. As the squire on one occasion caused the fight and suffered it to death, the fairy searched the whole house and found a scarf that was locked in an old chest with nine keys. She wrapped a scarf and ran to his fairies, and left the children to her mother in law. When the sisters grew up they became valuable and good girls and everyone knew about their goodness. Thanks to their work they had a lot of sheep and a big crop in the fields and vineyards. But suddenly encountered a storm and destroyed everything, but fairies were not discouraged, saying: "God gave, God took˝. Although it was difficult, they  survived with hard work. One Sunday in the village came beggars, who asked the sisters for a little food. Although there were hard times, sisters offered them with what they had - bread from bitter oak bark and water. For their kindness suddenly bark bread turned into a real bread and water into wine.

In fact the passengers were not beggars, but God and St. Peter. Travelling across the world they were observing the behavior of the rich to the poor. So they came to Marišćina. After meeting the fairies, a storm never more destroyed crops or livestock, and Čoška and Maroška lived in God's grace.

Both sisters were happily married, Čoška with the Prince of Lovran and Maroška with Pacic, who had a farm under Paka. At both the weddings sopele played great ˝sopele˝ and a wholeskin of sheep.. All Marčelji inhabitants were at the wedding.

Čoška and Maroška distributed Marišćinu among their serfs and the shepherds of  Marčelji. Therefore, every inhabitant of Marčelji has today a piece of land in Marišćina.
