THE STORY OF VIŠKOVO

There is little written information about the early history of the present area of Viškovo. Its largest part - Halubje is the area of shepherd tradition, as evidenced by the name that derives from the word halupa, which means shepherd huts. In the Middle Ages the whole area belonged to the Kastav municipality whose historical course marked the reign of the feudal lords Devinci, Walseeovci and then the Habsburgs and by the old law "Law of the City of Castua from the year 1400th."

The historical records from the 16th  century mention that through the present Viškovo was passing the road that connected Rijeka and Ljubljana. Viškovo settlement was founded at the discretion of the historian in the 18th century, and the article of "Our unity" from the year 1892nd, tells us: "The village of St. Matthew is a small, but charming village built on a small hill after which the surroundings gives him name "Viškovo hill˝. I will not praise him, but one must recognize him to be one of the most beautiful villages of Kastav area ... There are nice spacious houses and among them is glittering from the distance the church in honor of St.. Matthew, and school building. The latter has the most beautiful position in the village."

There are reliable data from the 18th  century at the time of Maria Theresa of which the af orementioned newspaper wrote: "In the centre of the village there is water well with the imperial coat of arms which was built by the Empress Maria Theresa, so the soldiers passing by at that time could have at hand while resting, clean, fresh water. It is properly built – it’s  throat was shackled with iron and provided with pulley for water lifting. It was in possession of the financial authority to the most recent period and after that it passed together with  the school building into the hands of the community - that it for use of priests and teachers. Close to the village is locatedbeautiful, vast cemetery, the last year increased, with St. Roko's church."

The developing of the area is  connected with the construction of the road that from the ancient times has opened the way to Italy, Austria and other European countries.

The history of origin of the name Viškovo, the center of the homonymous municipality is very interesting: built on the hill, the place was originally named Viškovo hill or Viški. On the hill was soon built the chapel dedicated to St. Matthew, after which the place was named Saint Matthew. The first mention of the name of Saint Matthew was recorded on the Austrian map originating in the period from the year 1763rd-1784th..
